A discussão sobre se a fotografia é arte ou não é longa e envolve uma diversidade de opiniões.
De acordo com Barthes, muitos não a consideram arte, por ser facilmente produzida e reproduzida, mas a sua verdadeira alma está em interpretar a realidade, não apenas copiá-la. Nela há uma série de símbolos organizados pelo artista e o receptor os interpreta e os completa com mais símbolos de seu repertório.
Fazer fotografia não é apenas apertar o disparador. Tem de haver sensibilidade, registrando um momento único, singular. O fotógrafo recria o mundo externo através da realidade estética.
Em um mundo dominado pela comunicação visual, a fotografia só vem para acrescentar, pode ser ou não arte, tudo depende do contexto, do momento, dos ícones envolvidos na imagem. Cabe ao observador interpretar a imagem, acrescentar a ela seu repertório e sentimento.
Fotografar é colocar na mesma linha de mira a cabeça, o olho e o coração.
